Legalize Marijuana

The legalization of marijuana has been a hot topic in the world of politics for the past few years. The nation is divided in opinion. Some people love the idea of legalizing of marijuana, while others dread the thought of it. Both sides of the argument have points that are valid and some points that do not even make any sense.

For the people who would benefit from the legalization of marijuana, there a few main points that they use to support their opinion. One of those points is the fact that it can provide medical benefits. It has been found that marijuana can be used to help with various conditions. Marijuana has been linked to being able to prevent and treat glaucoma. Glaucoma is an eye disease in which there is an increase in pressure in the eyeball. This pressure leads to a damaged optic nerve which will cause vision loss. It also has the ability to assist in the control of epileptic seizures. The THC in marijuana binds to the brain cells that control excitability and the regulation of relaxation. These point are only the start to the many benefits that marijuana can provide if it legalized.

However, there are many good reasons why it should not be legal. The legalization of marijuana will decrease worker productivity. The tobacco business is bound to take a large hit from the legalization, causing many people to be laid off of work. Second hand smoke would also become a big issue considering the mind-altering and euphoric effects that it has on the body and mind. More people would be unwillingly exposed to the marijuana smoke. One of the biggest reasons is that is a gateway drug, meaning that once you use marijuana you will be more tempted and more likely to try hard drugs like heroin or cocaine. This claim is not very well researched, but it is something to consider. The biggest reason that people disagree with the legalization of marijuana is that it is morally wrong. There is a stigma that is applied to people who smoke marijuana for recreational purposes.

There are many decent claims on both sides of the debate about legalizing marijuana. It would definitely made a lot of young people happy and boost the revenues in each state. But it does post some public health concerns that deserve to be considered and researched. Until then, the argument remains.
